Theophile-Alexandre
Steinlen (1858-1923), Steinlen came to Paris to work in the textile
industry. In the cafes and cabarets of Montmartre, he met many of
the political and art leaders of Paris. He worked with Toulouse-Lautrec,
Emile Zola, Armistad Bruant, Vallotton, Alphonse Allais, and others.
He began illustrating several political newspapers that matched his
socialist beliefs. He also made posters for cabarets, such as Le Chat
Noir and various advertisements. He worked in Lithography and painting.
Many of his images feature his daughter, Collette, at various ages.
Cats have also been a regular theme in his art. He published a series
of cartoons and drawings of cats (Des Chats) around 1900.
